The commission that is in charge of controling and monitoring tourism at Machu Picchu, PROMPERÚ, has recently announced that proposed visitor changes at the famous site will be implemented as of July 1, 2017.
As popular as Machu Picchu is, efforts to keep it a safe, sustainable and cherished visitor site continue to evolve.
Years ago, travelers were able to roam freely around the grounds of the ancient Incan city, however recent changes have included setting a fixed path / route that visitors must adhere to. This was partly due to some tourists being irresponsible, streaking naked around the ruins, others causing damage to the sacred site, and most recently, a German tourist who died trying to take a selfie in a restricted area.
These issues, combined with a desire to maintain a pristine environment at Machu Picchu mean more restrictions will be put in place this July. The changes include:
- Mandatory Tour Guides - no more independent travel
- Maximum group sizes of 16 people
- Two visitor times: 6am - 12noon OR 12noon to 5:30pm
If anyone wishes to visit Machu Picchu during both morning and afternoon, they will now require two tickets. Anyone booking one of our Galakiwi tours to Peru will be offered options and asked what tickets they prefer for their visit(s) to Machu Picchu.
