Yesterday, the ongoing seismic activity of Sierra Negra volcano on Isabela Island resulted in an eruption.
This is the first eruption of Sierra Negra Volcano since 2005, and the island is currently on an orange alert with no access available to Sierra Negra volcano. This means all tours are currently unable to include a volcano hike until it is safe to visit the area.
The volcanic activity has been captured in some great photos and videos, some of which you can see at the links at the end of this update.
The activity is along the Volcan Chico area and northern side of Sierra Negra, meaning the lava and activity does not currently present any harm to the town of Puerto Villamil or any areas commonly visited by tourists. Of course the situation can change at any time and those living in the rural areas of the highlands have been evacuated to town just to be safe.
With the Wall of Tears, Los Tuneles, Tintoreras and many other activities still possible on Isabela Island, all Galakiwi tours are currently running as per normal; however they are not including a volcano hike.
If there are any further changes that impact tour operations we will update this news post.
